Uniper selects ITM Power for 120MW green hydrogen project in the UK

ITM Power has been selected to supply six POSEIDON electrolysis modules for Uniper’s 120MW Humber H2ub® (Green) project, scheduled to be operational by 2029.

German energy group Uniper has selected British company ITM Power to supply equipment for its Humber H2ub® (Green) green hydrogen production project in the United Kingdom. Located at the Killingholme site, the project is planned with an initial capacity of 120MW and has been shortlisted in the UK government’s second Hydrogen Allocation Round (HAR2).

POSEIDON module deployment and industrial timeline

As part of the contract, ITM Power will deliver six POSEIDON electrolysis modules, each with a capacity of 20MW. These modules are designed to deliver high energy efficiency, fast response times, and a compact footprint suitable for large-scale deployments. The project is subject to a Final Investment Decision (FID), expected in 2026, with commercial operations targeted for 2029.

The project also foresees a potential extension of over 200MW, making it one of the largest electrolysis ventures in the UK. Under an agreement signed in March 2024 between Uniper and Phillips 66 Limited, part of the green hydrogen produced could be used to replace fuel gas in industrial-fired heaters at the Phillips 66 Humber Refinery.

Industrial partnerships and economic implications

Uniper stated that the collaboration with ITM Power marks a strategic milestone in progressing the project’s engineering phase. Jan Taschenberger, Chief Operating Officer of New Green Power and Gas at Uniper, said the company “looks forward to further developing the project around the POSEIDON modules”.

Dennis Schulz, Chief Executive Officer of ITM Power, said the selection would allow the company to support industrial development in the Killingholme area, where the site is located. The scale of the project may also stimulate the creation of skilled jobs and strengthen domestic green hydrogen production capabilities.

The Humber H2ub® (Green) is positioned as a central component of Uniper’s industrial strategy in the UK. By boosting local electrolysis capacity, the initiative aims to meet growing demand for alternative energy carriers in heavy industrial applications.
